Hummingbird “Scouts:” Myth of the Migratory Bird

Have you seen a lone hummingbird in your garden?

Many people call this early bird a “scout.” Some birds, like Purple Martins, do send a bird out in advance to scout potential nesting and breeding areas. However, hummers are loners, and migrate alone. There is no such thing as a hummingbird scout.

To end on a good note, they are coming and they will be looking for their favorite nectar to fuel them along to their journey further South. Consider planting their favorites, and putting out nectar in feeders they love. The early birds may not scout you, but the ones who find you will continue to visit you year after year after year.
