Winter Weed Cocktail for Lawn & Flowerbed Weeds Pre-Spring

Now that we are in the middle of February, and have seen a few warmer days, we’ve all had Spring fever!

What can you do to get your beds and lawns prepared for planting this Spring?

The top 3 players for right now are:

  1. Fertilome’s Weed Free Zone
This kills a majority of weeds. It’s like an all-purpose weed killer.
  2. Hi-Yield’s Atrazine Weed Killer. This is a selective weed killer. It’s best for control of both emerged weeds and weeds from seeds.
  3. Hi Yield’s Spreader Sticker. This improves and increases the absorption of insecticides, herbicides, etc.

These 3 on their own have their job to do in your lawn, but when mixed together they are a force for lawn weeds!
We call it our Winter Weed Cocktail.

1oz Fertilome Weed Free Zone

8.6oz Hi-Yield Atrazine

2 teaspoons Hi-Yield Spreader Sticker

Mix the ingredients together in 1-2 gallons of water in a pump sprayer and apply uniformly over 1,000 sq ft of lawn. For best results, apply starting in early February for winter weed control and help prevent Spring & Summer weeds. Applying Hi-Yield Dimension in early October will greatly help winter weeds from reoccurring.

Use Hi-Yield pre-emergent  every 3 months unless there is a heavy rain event. This will not kill the weeds, but it will prevent the seedlings from sprouting and eventually taking over. You can apply this over mulch in your flowerbed as well. It will not affect any shrubs or trees.

We also like the Preen product line- which has an organic product for your edible gardens.

Bonide organic. This is a great, effective product, but please be selective when you spray it on.

An important reminder is NOT to fertilize your lawn with Weed & Feed quite yet. When temperatures turn a little warmer is when you know the timing is better to fertilize your lawn.

This time of the year is the ideal time to kill Scale, which is a bug keen on attacking shrubs. We recommend Horticultural Oil for the organic garden, and Dormant Oil for the inorganic choice.
Another reason why this is the best time to attack Scale is due to the temperatures. These products cannot be used in the heat.

If you prevent weeds and Scale now, they are less likely to consume your outdoors in the near future.
